Introduction to popular science about UL2464 cable

Ⅰ. Cable

Wire and cable are wire products used to transmit electrical (magnetic) energy, information and realize electromagnetic energy conversion. The generalized wire and cable is also referred to as the cable, and the narrow-sense cable refers to the insulated cable, which can be defined as: an aggregate composed of the following parts; one or more insulated cores, and their respective possible coverings, the total protective layer and outer sheath, the cable may also have additional uninsulated conductors. For example, UL2464 cable is a solid or stranded bare copper or tinned copper wire cable.

At present, the main categories of UL series are AWM (Appliance Wiring Material); it is mainly used in the specification design of electronic wires.

AWM UL2464 is used for UL series rated voltage 300/300V, electronic and electrical instruments, electromechanical equipment, household appliances, internal signal devices or computer signal connections in buildings. In contact with oils and solvents, it can work at 60°C. The wire has strong anti-interference ability, especially suitable for the connection of computer signals.

Ⅱ. UL2464 cable conductor

Communication cables generally use copper as conductors to transmit current or electromagnetic signals. Commonly used copper conductors can be divided into bare copper, copper-plated, copper-clad steel, copper alloy, copper foil wire, etc.

  1. Bare copper—conductor has low resistance and is easy to be oxidized.
  2. Tin-plated copper—enhanced oxidation resistance, which is convenient for subsequent welding.
  3. Silver-plated copper—strong electrical conductivity, high price, mostly used for radio frequency cables and fluoroplastic high temperature wires.
  4. Copper clad steel—high strength, commonly used in overhead cables.
  5. Copper alloy—high strength (a small amount of other metals are added to copper).
  6. Copper foil wire—strong bending resistance and high softness (copper is pressed into thin sheets and wrapped on elastic fibers).

Ⅲ. Distinguishing between wires and cables

Looking at the distinction between wires and cables through UL2464 cable, there is no strict boundary between “wires” and “cables”. Usually, products with a small number of cores, a small product diameter and a simple structure are called wires, and those without insulation are called bare wires. Others The one with a larger conductor cross-sectional area (greater than 6 square millimeters) is called a large cable, the smaller one (less than or equal to 6 square millimeters) is called a small cable, and the insulated cable is also called a wire.

Ⅳ. UL2464 cable class composition

  • Conductors generally include: copper wire, aluminum wire, copper clad steel, iron wire, copper foil wire (Tinsel), etc.
  • Insulation generally includes: PVC, PE, PP, TEFLON, TPU, TPE, FPE, etc.
  • Sheaths generally include: PVC, PU,PA, neoprene, mica tape, ceramics, etc.
  • Protective layer: armor (steel pipe), ceramics, polyester fiber, woven mesh, etc.
  • Copper wires generally include: multi-strand wire (Strand), single-strand wire (Solid), tinned wire, aluminum wire, enameled wire, first twisted and then plated wire, copper foil wire (Tinsel).
  • Multi-strand wire: the most commonly used, most wires use multi-strand wire, mainly for the following reasons.
  • Easy to extrude and process, making the wire soft.
  • Increase the heat dissipation area.
  • Increase tensile strength, increase bending strength.
  • Reduce loss; (do not need to split conductors in large-section power cables, the skin effect and proximity effect will increase the cable current resistance and reduce the current carrying capacity).

Ⅴ. UL2464 cable insulation sheath and outer quilt

Insulation and outer quilt mainly play a protective role. Plasticizers, flame retardants, antioxidants, coupling agents, anti-aging agents, and anti-ultraviolet agents are added to PVC to make the outer quilt withstand different effects.

The insulation thickness is different, the withstand voltage level is different: (1mil=1/1000inch=0.0254mm)

  • Thickness is less than 15mil, for below 150V such as UL1571
  • Thickness is less than 30mil, for below 300V such as UL1007
  • Thickness is less than 45mil, for below 600V such as UL1015

Ⅵ. Wire and cable products are classified by use

  1. Bare wire: refers to products with only conductors and no insulating layer, including copper, aluminum and other metals and composite metal round single wires, stranded wires, flexible wires, and shaped wires for overhead transmission lines of various structures and profiles.
  2. Winding wire: In the form of winding, the magnetic field line is cut in the magnetic field to induce current, or the wire used to generate the magnetic field through the current, so it is also called electromagnetic wire, including enameled wire with various characteristics, wrapped wire, inorganic insulated wire Wait.
  3. Power cables: cable products used to transmit and distribute high-power electrical energy in the main lines of the power system, including power cables with various voltage levels and various insulations of 1~330kV and above.
  4. Communication cables and communication optical cables: communication cables are cables that transmit telephone, telegraph, television, radio, data and other electrical information; communication optical cables use optical fibers (optical fibers) as light wave transmission media for information transmission; Cables for the transmission of radio frequency signals in radio communications, broadcasting and related electronic equipment.
  5. Wires and cables for electrical equipment: Wires and cables for power connection lines that directly transmit electrical energy from the distribution point of the power system to various electrical equipment and appliances. This type of product is the most widely used and has the most varieties, and most UL2464 cables need to combine the characteristics of the equipment used and the environmental conditions to determine the structure and performance of the product.
