1.Introduction of UL XHHW XHHW-2

UL XHHW XHHW-2 is suitable for for use as general purpose wiring at maximum conductor temperature of 90°C in dry and wet locations.  XHHW / XHHW-2 for lighting and power – residential, commercial, industrial buildings in accordance with National Electrical Code, maximum conductor temperature of 90°C in wet or dry locations, 600 volts, for installation in conduit or other recognized raceways. 2. Suitable for use in low leakage circuits requiring a dielectric constant of 3.5 or less, such as isolated circuits supplying anesthetizing locations per Article 517-160 of the NEC. 3. Suitable for use as low leakage inductive (loop) vehicle detector wire in accordance with state and municipal requirements.Welcome to inquiry.

What’s the difference between THHN and XHHW-2 ?

THHN is coated with thermoplastic insulation.

XHHW-2 is  coated with thermoset insulation. 

 

THHN uses a thinner PVC insulation. It can lead to current leakage and dielectric breakdown While circuits or from chemical or environmental exposure. PVC emits a toxic smoke when burned and less flexible at cold temperatures. However, it is lighter in weight and less cost.

Thermoplastic compounds can be heated,  shaped and cooled to maintain the desired shape. This process can typically be repeated by applying heat to remelt the insulation, which can lead to potential danger in some applications.

XHHW-2 use thermoset insulation. XHHW-2 have XLPE (crosslinked polyethylene) insulation. XLPE is more resistant to chemicals, ozone, and abrasions.  XLPE is less toxic than PVC when fired. 

Thermoset compounds utilize a curing process which causes a chemical reaction, allowing the polymers to cross-link. Once cured, the thermoset compounds retain their shape and will not remelt when heat is applied.
